Independence Day, or 4th of July, is right around the corner and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by taking an RV trip. This year, Independence Day falls on a Wednesday—which means your 4th of July road trip has an excuse to last all week and weekend. Check out these great places to celebrate the 4th of July in an RV.
Washington D.C
This one might be a bit obvious, being the nation’s capitol and all, but Washington D.C. is an amazing place to celebrate our nation’s independence day. There are several parades to join while in D.C. on the 4th, including the grand National Independence Day Parade. When you’re not watching a parade, wander around the city’s historical landmarks and many museums. End the day with a spectacular firework show over the National Mall.
For RV parks to stay the night, check out Cherry Hill Park. Open year round, this is the closest RV campground to Washington, D.C. and travelers have the ability to reserve spots in advance through their site here. While this park is technically located in Maryland, outside of the capitol, you can get into the city via the public transit system—DC metro—and explore all Washington, D.C. has to offer.

Boston, Massachusetts
Boston is home to many historical figures and events that have shaped America’s history. This beautiful, cobblestone city is one of our country’s oldest and most cherished cities. Patriotic activities to take part in on the 4th of July include walking the Freedom Trail. This is a 2.5-mile long path traversing through downtown Boston that passes 16 historical sites.
For more outdoor adventures, catch a boat to the Boston Channel Islands for some hiking and to see a different side of the bustling city. After the sun sets, be sure to catch a spectacular fireworks show over the Charles River.
As one of America’s oldest cities, Boston is not built to accommodate today’s larger vehicles, such as a standard RV. That said, there aren’t any RV parks within the city limits of Boston, but between Boston and Cape Cod, you’ll find Normandy Farms RV park. A really beautiful family-friendly campground, Normandy Farms has a lot of great amenities and also has the capability of taking reservations in advance.

San Diego, California
Last but not least, San Diego is another amazing spot for RVers to celebrate the 4th of July. This west coast gem of a city is known for it’s mild, year-round weather, which is perfect for travelers in RVs. San Diego has a very large firework display (fireworks can be seen from all over the greater San Diego area) and 4th of July celebration titled the “big bay boom.”
Camping in southern California is amazing, but some planning should be involved to secure the best RV site. Check out San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa and Santa Fe RV park or Mission Bay RV Park.
