2025 Guide to Surfing and Van Camping in California

This article was written for us by our friend Adam Bosch, Founder and CEO of altCamp

California has long been a haven for surfers and van lifers alike, offering a combination of excellent waves and on-the-sand campgrounds that real estate developers would be chomping at the bit to get a piece of. At altCamp, we’ve had the honor of hosting some of the world’s best surfers, including 2-time surfing world champion Filipe Toledo, and we bring decades of personal surfing experience to the table. As a former competitive surfer myself, I started altCamp to fulfill the dream of chasing swells in a van and sharing that stoke with others. Below, I’ll share five of the best surf-and-camp destinations in California to help you plan your next adventure.

1. San Elijo State Beach

Location: Cardiff-by-the-Sea, CA

San Elijo State Beach is a quintessential Southern California surf spot and one of our all-time favorites. For the ultimate experience, try to snag a “Premium” campsite on the bluff overlooking the waves. Be mindful that sites closer to the train tracks on the inland side can be noisy, so plan accordingly.

The waves here break year-round over a rock-reef ocean bottom, offering a variety of wave styles for surfers of all levels. Beyond the beach, you’ll find the Seaside Market, known for its famous Cardiff Crack tri-tip, as well as the Patagonia Surf Shop and Best Pizza & Brew—all within walking distance.

The campground is equipped with RV hookups, dump stations, warm showers, and a fully stocked camp store. Reservations fill up quickly, so book well in advance or check for last-minute cancellations.

2. Surf Outpost Campground, Malibu

Location: Malibu, CA

Perched directly above the Pacific Coast Highway on the bluffs of Malibu, Surf Outpost Campground offers panoramic coastal views and proximity to world-famous surf. Located just 8 minutes from Surfrider Beach, you’ll find one of the longest and most legendary right-hand waves on the West Coast. Other nearby surf spots include Zuma Beach, Point Dume, and Topanga Beach.

The campground is both campervan and RV-friendly, with full hookups, a dump station, and a laundry room. It’s also within walking distance of excellent dining at Malibu Seafood and hiking in Corral Canyon, making it a versatile destination for all types of campers. Whether you’re paddling out or hiking through nearby trails, this spot delivers the ultimate Malibu experience.

3. El Capitan State Beach

Location: Santa Barbara County, CA

El Capitan State Beach is a wooded campground with a stellar surf break onsite. About 15 miles north of downtown Santa Barbara, this campground sits near a rocky right-hand point that can produce some of California’s best waves when it’s firing. Be warned: it gets crowded when it’s on and is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers when overhead.

The campground itself offers a mix of tent sites, RV sites, yurts, and cabins. While it’s beautiful year-round, the best surfing conditions occur on a W or WNW swell, typically around wintertime. After catching waves, hop in the van and explore downtown Santa Barbara, rent a bike at the campground, or unwind around a fire pit.

4. Jalama Beach

Location: Santa Barbara County, CA

Jalama Beach feels like stepping into another world. Located about an hour north of El Capitan, the journey takes you down a winding road through untouched areas of California that many have never seen. This secluded gem boasts 14 miles of beach and, due to its location on Point Conception, picks up swell year-round.

The waves here cater to all skill levels, though winter can bring larger swells. Early morning sessions are best, as the winds often pick up by late morning. Amenities include RV hookups, a playground, a fully loaded camp store, and the must-try “Jalama Burger” at the on property restaurant. Be prepared for limited cell service and spotty Wi-Fi, so you can truly disconnect.

5. New Brighton State Beach

Location: Capitola, CA

Nestled on a forested bluff overlooking Monterey Bay, New Brighton State Beach offers a peaceful retreat for surfers and campers alike. While the beach itself isn’t a surf spot, it’s within a short drive of Santa Cruz’s iconic breaks, including Steamer Lane (7.8 miles), Pleasure Point (3.8 miles), and The Hook (3.4 miles).

Fall and winter provide the best surfing conditions in the area, but chilly water temperatures mean you’ll want to pack your warmest wetsuit and booties. The campground has over 100 sites, including RV spots with hookups and a dump station. It’s a serene, family-friendly destination with easy access to nearby Capitola’s charming shops and restaurants.
