If you’re one for the outdoors, then you couldn’t ask for a better escape to the wilderness than San Angelo State Park. Occupying what is known as Concho Country, you’ll find yourself in the midst of four different ecological zones at the state park; the High Plains to the north of the park, Texas Hill Country to the south, Rolling Plains to the east and the dry Trans-Pecos to the west. With such a wide range of terrain, the outdoor activities here are quite a few, and planning a motorhome camping trip to San Angelo State Park is a good idea. You can look forward to hiking, camping, biking, horse riding, fishing, bird, and wildlife observation, and geocache. While you are at San Angelo State Park, try to make use of its over 50 miles of multi-use trails, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. If you have kiddos, check out the two-mile long Dinosaur Trail that passes through fossilized tracks of pre-dinosaur creatures. There are four easy trails to hike, ranging from two miles to about five miles, that go above 1900 feet above sea level. The views, of course, are fantastic. For anglers, the O.C. Fisher Reservoir and the Concho River are a huge attraction. From largemouth bass, white bass, and white crappies, the reservoir is ideal for shore or pier fishing that doesn’t require a fishing license, but for boat fishing, you need a valid fishing license. If you happen to forget packing fishing gear into your RV rental before your trip, you can rent gear from the state park. If you’d like to sign up for a Ranger Program, there are quite a few available. Rangers lead bison and longhorn tours through the state park, as well as hikes, and horseback rides. To familiarize yourself with the terrain, flora, and fauna of the area, join one of the nature and history programs. And for astronomy buffs, there’s a stargazing program available as well.
