2019 TAXA TAXA Trailer
Have you been searching for a way to spend more time camping, even during the rainy seasons? Are you interested in trying out a sweet modern camper, but daunted by the commitment and up-front investment? If so, we might have a solution for you!Designed by a former Nasa architect, the Taxa Mantis comfortably sleeps two adults and two kids and is rugged enough for light backcountry use. We bought our 2019 Mantis in April of 2020, and have enjoyed both dry camping and camping at state parks around Oregon and beyond. The 2019 Mantis has the following:
- Rear double bed that folds up into a sofa when not in use
- Front double bunk system that also folds into a sofa; tight for adults, but works well for our kids (ages 7 & 9)
- A galley kitchen with Dometic sink, 2-burner propane stove, Dometic mini-fridge, and plenty of storage for food and gear
- A Truma Combi propane furnace + hot water heater and two exterior-mounted propane tanks
- A wet bath with cassette toilet and hand-held indoor shower - plus an outdoor shower hose too! (Additional $150 cleaning fee applies if you use the cassette toilet)
- A pop-up style tent roof that opens up on all sides for airy, well-ventilated campground use, and collapses down for a streamlined look while towing
- 30A electrical + water hook-ups for front country campingThe Mantis is comparably light; at about 2,900 lbs dry weight, it can be towed by most medium-sized trucks and SUVs; a 5,000-lb tow rating is required for safe towing. A V8 is not required, but does make towing more enjoyable. 2" ball hitch receive and 7-pin connector is required (the Mantis has an Autowbrake brake controller included). As with any sophisticated tow-behind camper, there is a learning curve associated with the Taxa Mantis, and we want all parties to be comfortable with the rental arrangement. We therefore rent our Mantis only by the week or the month (with pretty low nightly rates) and include a 30-60 minute orientation with you at the start of your rental. We ask our renters to abide by the following rules:- Please do your best to keep as much dirt out of the Mantis as possible. We usually leave shoes outside or just inside the door; a floor mat, broom, and dustpan are included with the rental.- To protect the water and plumbing system, we ask that you (1) please be diligent to keep any solids from going down the sink; and (2) avoid freezing temperatures (< 32 F) while using the plumbing system. Dry/waterless camping with the Mantis is freezing temperatures is fine (enjoyable even!) so long as the water lines are drained first.- Although there is a Thetford cassette toilet inside the Mantis, we recommend it for emergency use only. We have actually never used it before - if you choose to, we will charge an additional $150 to clean it! Sorry not sorry. What's includedOur Mantis comes well equipped and ready for adventure. The following gear is included with each rental:- Bedding for the double bed (mattress topper and blankets; BYO sheets & pillows)
- Full kitchen gear: pots, pans, plates, utensils, cups and mugs, etc.
- RV-specific equipment: water hose and filter, tools, leveling blocks, hitch locks, etc.
- Basic camp tools: hatchet, water jug, LED lantern, etc.
- Roof rack and cargo storage for extra gear (great for firewood, a gas can, etc.)RecommendationsThe Mantis can handle well-maintained Forest Service Roads - dirt and gravel. While it excels at off-grid camping, with a 30A electrical and water hook-ups it is equally at home at a State Park campground.

My wife Alex and I purchased our 2019 TAXA Outdoors Mantis in April of 2019 - our biggest COVID purchase! We have loved camping with it ever since. We have taken it all over Oregon and to nearly a dozen other states, coast to coast. We usually camp with our two daughters (ages 7 & 9) and our dog Abner.
