We rented from Oliver as he was a friend of a friend. We paid full price for the van: $1100 for 5 days. In short, the van was not prepped for us, battery dead upon pick up, solar battery didn’t recharge so electric cooler died, and propane wasn’t filled, not to mention the license plate tags expired a year ago.
After a 6 hour flight to Oregon, the van wouldn’t start and had a dead battery on arrival to pick up the van. We called the host who came over, handed us a handheld, barely charged battery pack not suited for RV’s, and told us to look up a YouTube video to jump his van because he had a meeting to get to. We did not have any tools to get to the battery, but borrowed some from a friendly neighbor. I inquired about the roadside assistance that comes through Outdoorsy and the van’s host urged us to not go that route because it would cost him money. The host left, and I called roadside assistance to get that going. Upon inspector of the van we discover a filthy bed with pine needles debris on the sheet, a white stain on the pillow case, very worn fish net stockings under the sheets, egg yolk on napkins, dirty cooler, dirty pans, no cups or silverware, but decide it’s too much hassle to switch vans at this point. Then we notice the expired license plate tags by over a year- Outdoorsy confirms the van is not in compliance, but states they can’t get us a refund, that would all be up to the host.
We get a jump from roadside assistance, the van starts and we decide to make the best of our trip. The cooler and the stove worked the first day, bed was cozy. On the second day, we ran out of propane gas for cooking, but luckily we were camping with other people and used their stove. On the fourth day, we were planning on camping alone and now would have to refill the propane gas. We only made eggs and coffee, so that told us the propane was almost empty to begin with. We noticed the solar wasn’t charging the battery so the electric cooler was also beginning to die and our food at risk for spoiling. Once we got back into cell service we had a discussion with the host who agreed to a $300 refund given the van wasn’t prepped at all, even though we made the booking a month in advance. The owner never provided a refund at all and responses from him were spotty at best.
We refilled the gas tank upon returning it, and he was willing to meet us at the airport to pick up the van, which was helpful. The bed was also comfortable, but given the amount we paid and the expectations we had for the rental to provide our needs, we were greatly disappointed in both the condition of the van and the host's lack of preparation, service, and follow through to right the situation.
