Just to the north of town, making it an easy day trip is Parvin State Park near Vineland. Parvin perfectly straddles two of New Jersey’s classic wilderness zones: the Pine Barrens and the swampy hardwood forests of the coastal region. There are three different large bodies of water contained within the park; for swimming, there is Parvin Lake, while boating can be enjoyed on Thundergust Lake, and fishing in Muddy Run. Those looking to enjoy more aquatic adventures will have a wealth of opportunity. If you want to do some wildlife viewing, the multiple ecosystems are home to a wide variety of plants and animals, making the entire park a sort of wilderness wonderland. If you’d rather experience some of the Jersey shore, you can head to the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge near Woodbine. Originally founded as a haven for migratory shorebirds, the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge has become a habitat for all kinds of South Jersey wildlife. The park is home to four trails that will guide you through the various regions of the park that are open to visitors. Birders can rejoice at the refuge because more than 100 different migratory shorebirds and songbirds use the site as a migratory stopping point. A great day trip, heading north, is the Bass River State Forest near Port Republic. One of the oldest state forests in New Jersey, you can explore the nature trails that wind around Lake Absegami, enjoy the glorious canopies made up of cedar, maple, and pine trees, and even enjoy a few fishing outposts. One truly unique feature at Bass River is what is locally known as the “Pygmy Forest,” where a certain area of trees didn’t quite reach their full height. So, you can feel like a giant as you hike through the Pygmy Forest comprised of 4-foot-tall pine and oak trees. While there are other forests like this in the world, the one located in Bass River is the most expansive in the world.
