Unlike the southern part of Minnesota, the northern part of the state is a massive playground for outdoorsy folks like you. If you were to hike or even bike through the region’s network of trails, it would take years if not a decade. Speaking of trails, Cascade River State Park is full of them. In two to three hours depending on your hiking progress, the trail will lead right to the top of Lookout Mountain and back down. Judging from its name, the views from the top of the cliffs are spectacular. What pulls the crowds here is the magnificent waterfall system. If you’re just passing by in a rental motorhome at Cascade River State Park and time isn’t a luxury, take the Cascade River Lower Loop which leads to the series of five waterfalls after a short half-mile hike. If you’re unsatisfied by the short hike, the Lake Superior Shoreline trail offers over a mile long of fun on the lake’s shoreline, making its way past a couple of picnic sites suitable for a family day out. The great thing about this park is that during the winter, it is totally a new experience. The extensive trails turn into pristine cross country skiing terrain. If you’re a photography aficionado, you might have noticed that due to its remoteness, it is a perfect night sky photography area. The nearest big city, Duluth, being about two hours away, offers almost no light pollution.
