Thanks for inquiring about this Camper! "Sandy" is an Automatic 1982 Air-cooled Volkswagen Westfalia — perfect for cruising around Maui. The last of the AirCooled Vanagons- No Power steering, but all the nostalgia with bigger steering wheel :). Westy Vanagons are the jack of all trades with a built in sink, stove, storage closets. This camper sleeps up to 4, 2 in the pop top and 2 down below on the fold down bed.
It's easy to drive, definitely looks like a local car, and has that undeniable Pure Vintage VW Feel..
Once inside, pop the top, feel the breezes, and prep your food while standing in kitchen with the fold out kitchen table, 2 burner stove, sink. It may not be a brand new Campervan…. But there is nothing quite like experiencing the Vanlife on Maui in a classic VW.

Our campers are allowed the drive the Road the Hana, including the ‘backside’ road. Please Note- ALL Damages Incurred ON THE Back Road TO Hana ARE Your Responsibility. AS Well AS Flat Tires Caused BY Hitting Road Hazards AND Irresponsible Driving / AND OR Driving IN Sand ETC.This Campervan is NOT allowed up Crater Road / Waipoli Road / Haleakala Hwy AT ALL- You will be charged with loss of deposit.You Cannot just camp anywhere you like here on Maui!! Please respect private property. However, There are many private areas to camp on Maui, and yes some are off the beaten path. During Checkin process, we can go over some of those details.There are many spots where you can reserve a campervan in Maui. You can make reservations ahead of time depending on season, but we do recommend having a rough plan and booking ahead of time.1) Waianapanapa State Park - This is a great spot near Hana and has some beautiful quiet and shaded camping. There is a black sand beach and a great 3 mile loop hike with some spectacular views of the Hana Coast and the slopes of Haleakala. There are only bathroom facilities here but no drinking water.
2) Kipahulu (Haleakala National Park) - There is great shaded camping here and great short hikes. Pipiwai Trail is a 4 miles round trip trail that winds through a freshwater stream and diverse forest areas with views of waterfalls and other natural features. This is where the Seven Sacred Pools is located. This area has picnic tables, BBQ grills and outdoor pit toilets but no drinking water.
3) Papalaua Wayside County Park - This park lies along Honoapiilani Hwy #30 on the way to Lahaina along a sandy beach with excellent snorkeling and great SUPboarding. Shade is provided by kiawe trees. No water supply available and it has portable toilets and BBQ grills.
4) Camp Olowalu - Recently renovated, the camp is on the ocean along Hwy 30 about 6 miles south of Lahaina at Olowalu. It is in a grove of mature trees with picnic tables, drinking water, showers and toilets. Swimming and snorkeling are good and in the winter months a nice place to watch whales. This campground has laundry facilities and free Wifi.

Maui Westy Campers- I’ve lived on Maui for over 20 years, and happy to share useful info for your time on Maui. Rent one of our campers and enjoy an adventurous, safe and affordable way to explore Maui. Campers come Fully stocked and ready for your adventure.Blend in with the Maui locals with these classic, easy to drive Modern Campers or Vintage VW Campers. Maui's roads / parking lots are Small, and ALL of these are the same length as a regular car, allowing for easier navigation. Plus sleeping inside a vehicle is a lot more convenient and safe than a tent.. especially when its windy and rainy. (Half of Maui is a rainforest ;)Please note that posted rate varies from as low as $99 per night but can fluctuate up to $200 per night depending on which vehicle and the busy/slow season.

Final rental charges are due 2 weeks prior to pickup of Camper Van. Payments must be paid in U.S. Dollars by Cash, Cashier's Check, Travelers Check or Credit Card. Sorry, we don’t accept personal checks.Terms and ConditionsDriving License: All drivers must possess a driver license valid for the entire rental period and a major credit card. An international driver license is recommended for foreign tourists. Only drivers listed on the contract are allowed to drive. All drivers and their drivers’ licenses must be present at time of vehicle pick up.Vehicle Pickup and Return: Vehicles are available for pickup by appointment 7 days a week, and must be picked up and dropped off at Maui Westy Campers.
YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR LATE RETURNS! ( up to full day charge)Travel Area Restrictions: We do NOT allow our VW Campers to be driven up to Haleakala National Park. Crater Road is way too steep for these little engines. Same applies for PoliPoli Springs, Waipoli road, and going up Haleakala hwy. Driving on unpaved areas is not allowed. Renter is liable for all damages and towing charges incurred due to operating in unfavorable conditions. This includes tire damage.
YOU WILL LOSE ENTIRE DEPOSIT FOR DRIVING OFF ROAD AND IN MY RESTRICTED AREAS!Violations / Tickets: You are 100% responsible for any traffic violations during your stay. including ILLEGAL CAMPING FINES!!! (parking tickets...etc).Smoking: Smoking is not allowed inside the camper van. Evidence of smoking is subject to a minimum $200 charge.No pets!! Extra charge if pet evidence found.
Towing: Towing of anything is prohibited with a camper van.Rental Extension:

Full refund 30 or more days from departure minus a $200 processing fee. Between 30 and 14 days of departure date, 50% of payments will be refunded. No refunds if cancelling within 14 days of departure date.
Our modest cancellation policy keeps RVs from being blocked out just in case someone needs them and then cancels if they don’t. This keeps the reservation schedule valid and fair for all our customers. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we highly recommend purchasing trip insurance which will reimburse you 100% of your trip should you not be able to travel due to COVID-19.Early returns: No refunds are given for early returns after acceptance of the vehicle. Same applies for changes to reservations within 1 month of pickup.Insurance: I reccomend the basic insurance plan as it fully protects you and the van for incidents / claims that are over $500.Security Deposit: A refundable deposit is collected at time of booking or just a few days before pickup. This also serves as a damage deposit and is separate from the rental fees. Any damages during your trip will be deducted from your deposit. Damages include—interior to van, broken equipment which I’ve provided, sidewall tire & Rim damage, scratches $ dents to exterior of the van. Sidewall tire blowouts and damage/ flats from rough roads are your responsibility and will come out of the security deposit.
-—Injuries, Death and or Dismemberments: Regardless of fault, If costs of damage exceeds the deposit, renter is fully liable but not limited to costs incurred due to Injuries, Death, and or Dismemberments, and also court fees incurred by Maui Westy Campers and all parties involved.MECHANICAL PROBLEMS Our vehicles are fully serviced and cared for. Mechanicals are continually checked, renewed, and maintained by our in-house VW technicians, so problems are not common. However, they do sometimes occur and we want to be clear about our policies prior to booking.Should you have a problem en-route, we are the first call you should make after making sure you are in a safe place. Hopefully the problem can be sorted and you will be on your way without too much inconvenience. Many times a simple fix is all that is required and you are back on your way after a phone call
We may refund a day's rental fee if the fix takes more than 12 hours.
If the problem is more serious, we have two choices:
1. We will get you to the nearest safe location where you can relax, and if another of our vehicles is available we will deliver the van and swap vehicles for you in the shortest possible time. The replacement vehicle may or may not be exactly the same as the one you started with. If you prefer to rent another vehicle locally, we will refund the balance of the rental period. We are not responsible for any accommodation expenses.
2. in case of breakdown just due to mechanical failure, and a proper replacement is not available, or it would require an excessive amount of time, we will assist you in getting to where you may arrange alternate transport, and wish you a safe onward journey. We will either refund any monies we've collected for the outstanding rental period, or offer a credit for an equivalent rental period at a future date of your choosing.
We want our policy to be fair and we ask you to consider before you book that this is a possibility. But if it happens, kick back and chill out. We have every confidence we can sort things out.
If you have any difficulties report these immediately to Maui Westy Campers. If you have an accident (or breakdown) you are responsible for your accommodation expenses. Maui Westy Campers liability extends to either replacing your vehicle with a similar one or refund. If vehicle is damaged in an accident due to your fault, or you experience a breakdown to negligence, no refunds and loss of security deposit occurs. (this includes ignoring warning lights and or not reporting any symptoms ahead of time, and just pushing the vehicle until it breaks)
If you experience a breakdown due to lack of exercising ordinary care while in possession of the vehicle then your trip will end without reimbursement for rental days lost and the primary driver can be responsible for towing, repair of damages incurred, and in addition, their security deposit will be forfeited. (Ordinary care includes immediately turning off the engine if any red blinking lights are present or the buzzer alarm is sounding off,, i.e.,proper fuel (92 octane) ; proper gear selection; not overheating the engine; not driving more than the recommended 100 miles per day and the like - PLEASE INQUIRE IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.)Fuel Policy: Use Only 92 octance or ethanol free gas!!!! A full tank of gas is purchased at the time of rental. Please return the Camper with a full tank of gas. These are classic VWs and fuel gauges are not always accurate below 1/8 tank. Maximum 200 miles per tank.Terms and conditions may change without notice.

Same applies for changes to reservations within 1 month of pickup.Insurance: I reccomend the basic insurance plan as it fully protects you and the van for incidents / claims that are over $500.Security Deposit: A refundable deposit is collected at time of booking or just a few days before pickup. This also serves as a damage deposit and is separate from the rental fees. Any damages during your trip will be deducted from your deposit. Damages include—interior to van, broken equipment which I’ve provided, sidewall tire & Rim damage, scratches $ dents to exterior of the van. Sidewall tire blowouts and damage/ flats from rough roads are your responsibility and will come out of the security deposit.
-—Injuries, Death and or Dismemberments: Regardless of fault, If costs of damage exceeds the deposit, renter is fully liable but not limited to costs incurred due to Injuries, Death, and or Dismemberments, and also court fees incurred by Maui Westy Campers and all parties involved.MECHANICAL PROBLEMS Our vehicles are fully serviced and cared for. Mechanicals are continually checked, renewed, and maintained by our in-house VW technicians, so problems are not common. However, they do sometimes occur and we want to be clear about our policies prior to booking.Should you have a problem en-route, we are the first call you should make after making sure you are in a safe place. Hopefully the problem can be sorted and you will be on your way without too much inconvenience. Many times a simple fix is all that is required and you are back on your way after a phone call
We may refund a day's rental fee if the fix takes more than 12 hours.
If the problem is more serious, we have two choices:
1. We will get you to the nearest safe location where you can relax, and if another of our vehicles is available we will deliver the van and swap vehicles for you in the shortest possible time. The replacement vehicle may or may not be exactly the same as the one you started with. If you prefer to rent another vehicle locally, we will refund the balance of the rental period. We are not responsible for any accommodation expenses.
2. in case of breakdown just due to mechanical failure, and a proper replacement is not available, or it would require an excessive amount of time, we will assist you in getting to where you may arrange alternate transport, and wish you a safe onward journey. We will either refund any monies we've collected for the outstanding rental period, or offer a credit for an equivalent rental period at a future date of your choosing.
We want our policy to be fair and we ask you to consider before you book that this is a possibility. But if it happens, kick back and chill out. We have every confidence we can sort things out.
If you have any difficulties report these immediately to Maui Westy Campers. If you have an accident (or breakdown) you are responsible for your accommodation expenses. Maui Westy Campers liability extends to either replacing your vehicle with a similar one or refund. If vehicle is damaged in an accident due to your fault, or you experience a breakdown to negligence, no refunds and loss of security deposit occurs. (this includes ignoring warning lights and or not reporting any symptoms ahead of time, and just pushing the vehicle until it breaks)
If you experience a breakdown due to lack of exercising ordinary care while in possession of the vehicle then your trip will end without reimbursement for rental days lost and the primary driver can be responsible for towing, repair of damages incurred, and in addition, their security deposit will be forfeited. (Ordinary care includes immediately turning off the engine if any red blinking lights are present or the buzzer alarm is sounding off,, i.e.,proper fuel (92 octane) ; proper gear selection; not overheating the engine; not driving more than the recommended 100 miles per day and the like - PLEASE INQUIRE IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND.)Fuel Policy: Use Only 92 octance or ethanol free gas!!!! A full tank of gas is purchased at the time of rental. Please return the Camper with a full tank of gas. These are classic VWs and fuel gauges are not always accurate below 1/8 tank. Maximum 200 miles per tank.Terms and conditions may change without notice.
