This van I personally built out to enable me to travel through all 50 states over the course of a year. I'm proud to be able to say that it has been to all 48 of the continental states! My focus when building the van was on it being spacious and ideal for solo travel. It served me very well during my travels and I hope it will be enjoyable to other as well. The van is fairly modular and can be modified based on what you need it for.Features:
- A bed that can extend out to be slept on or slid in to allow for more space.
- A removable, factory installed back row of seats so you can bring up to 5 people with you wherever you are going if needed. This can be excluded for much more space in the van if not needed.
- A 10 gallon water tank that feeds a sink and shower head at the back of the van (the shower head is intended for outside use if needed, there isn't a space for showering inside the van).
- The van has a 250 watt solar panel on the roof that charges batteries that power the 12 and 120 volt systems within the van.
- There is a 120 volt inverter with 2 power outlets in the van so you can power anything that you could normally use in a household - within a reasonable amount of power draw, and assuming the batteries have enough charge (toasters, blenders, laptops, etc.).
- Garmin GPS device in case you might find yourself somewhere with no cell phone service.
- I installed a ceiling fan to help with air circulation and cooling the van.
- The van has a rear view camera. It's definitely bigger than your average car, but is very easy to drive and park.
- The van has a mini-fridge and a microwave.
- All of the windows are tinted. The windows in the front of the van are tinted but still pretty transparent, many states regulate how dark the windows in the front of your car can be, so this was a necessity. The windows in the middle and rear of the van are very dark, it is difficult to see through them from outside even when you are right next to the van.
-The windows have curtains as well for even more privacy.
-The van is tall, at 6'2" I can stand straight up inside it and not hit the ceiling.
-Very spacious!
Important things to note:
-There is a ceiling fan - but I do not have a generator with which to run an auxiliary air conditioning or heater. So be mindful if you plan on taking the van anywhere extremely hot or cold, especially if you plan on sleeping inside. Again, I lived in this van for a year, and experienced few problems with it, but it is important to take in mind the risks of bad weather.
-The van does NOT have a grey-water tank. Any water you pour down the sink simply drains out from the bottom of the van. Please be mindful of anything you pour down the sink.
-The dimensions of the bed in the van are about 25 inches wide by 67 inches long. I am 6'2" and found it to be perfectly comfortable, I imagine 2 people would be pushing it though unless you were very small haha. I have an air mattress you can lay down in the center area if you do not have the rear seats installed.
-In my opinion, if you need to sleep within the van itself, the van would work for 2 people. More than 2 people is pushing it. If you do not need to sleep in the van, the back row of seats allows you to travel with up to 5 people in factory-installed seats, or 2 people and lots of open space in the van if you don't need the seats.
What's includedOf course you can exclude anything you may not need, but I have available:
• Garmin GPS
• Dash Cam
• Removable Rear Seats
• Mini Fridge
• Microwave
• Snow Chains (for 2 tires)
• An Air Mattress that fits the Middle of the Van
• Some Food (Popcorn, Cliff Bars)
• 2 Sets of Microwave Safe Bowls, Cups and Forks/Spoons
RecommendationsMy favorite things to do with the van are:
- Visiting Nation Parks
- Taking it for long hikes
- Exploring new places/states
Take a group of friends on a week camping trip to some nation parks in Utah or any state that is new to you. Access to a microwave and a mini fridge really does make a huge difference on the road. There was nothing better after an 8-10 hour hike than getting back to my van and having a warm meal and cold water. Makes me want to get back on the road just thinking about it.
Other things to noteThe van does not have a built-in restroom!
Please treat the van as if it were your own, and enjoy your travels. The van is a means to an end, not the end itself.
I typically got around 18-19 mpg. You will probably get the best fuel efficiency driving around 60 mph.The batteries for the minifridge/microwave will likely last 2-4 days without sun.No pets
No smoking

Meet your host, Chris

Member since 2023

In 2022 I bought a van and built it out myself so that I could live in it for a year while I traveled from state to state. Between late 2022 and late 2023 I saw all 50 states and thoroughly enjoyed my journey. I'm hoping I can share what I've built with others and allow them to experience some of what I have.
