In the far north of Indiana is the Chain O’ Lakes State Park, which is named for its 13 lakes (nine of which are connected via a central waterway). It’s a popular destination for boating, fishing, and swimming, with hiking trails winding through the surrounding wilderness. Several trails wind through the park and range from easy to rugged, with Big Clifty Falls and Little Clifty Falls easily viewed from an overlook carved out of the side of the canyon. Drive west to experience Spring Mill State Park in Mitchell, which is home to an excellent pioneer village and the Gus Grissom Memorial. It’s located on the Mitchell Karst Plain, with a variety of caves and sinkholes carved into the limestone below. Jump aboard the boat tour that travels into the Twin Caves and admire the 1930's Spring Mill Inn. A historic watermill is among the structures on display at the pioneer village, and the Gus Grissom Memorial honors one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts. Aside from a nature center detailing the local ecology, the Spring Mill State Park campground has a wide selection of electric and full-hookup sites available. If you’re after a beach vacation, head to the Indiana Dunes State Park. It extends along three miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, with exceptional hiking, birding, and a variety of water pursuits on offer. Begin your visit at the Dorothy Buell Memorial Visitor Center or cycle along the Calumet Trail before camping at the Dunewood Campground, which offers pull-through sites, an RV dump station, restrooms, and shower facilities.
