Three fairly large forest preserves worth checking out are Spring Lake Forest Preserve, west of Palatine; Arthur L Janura Forest Preserve (southwest); and Ned Brown Preserve (or Busse Woods, south). All are close and easily accessed. Spring Lake has a variety of landscapes, grasslands, wetlands, woodlands and savannas, which have rugged trails for hiking or horseback riding. The landscapes alternate between flat and rolling hills, and in winter are used for cross country skiing. The north section of the preserve is designated by the Audubon Society as an important bird area; bird watchers can glimpse bobolinks, which migrate from Argentina's grasslands in June. Fishing is not allowed in Spring Lake. Cycling enthusiasts should try Arthur L. Janura Forest Preserve. It has paved and unpaved trails for walking, hiking and biking, and wildlife viewing. There are park benches at regular intervals (roughly a mile apart) where slow walkers can relax. Deer are easy to spot here, especially in the morning. November is rut season for the bucks; if you see antlers, you are probably ok but should still use caution.
