Tucked away amid the Santa Monica Mountains, Point Mugu State Park offers an abundance of opportunities for outdoor recreation. For most people, however, a visit to this beautiful park typically starts down on the beach. With five miles of shoreline on offer, the coastal scenery here is quite spectacular. There are imposing rocky bluffs and sand dunes backing stretches of pristine beach, and anyone who loves being near the sea will instantly feel right at home taking a stroll along the sand. If the weather (and the water) is warm enough, you can strip down to your swimwear and enjoy a cooling dip. Other Point Mugu campers prefer to simply stake out a spot on the sand to read a book, catch some sun, and simply watch the waves roll in. Keen anglers can enjoy surf fishing straight from the beach. Once you've spent some time enjoying the sand between your toes, you might want to slip into some hiking boots and go exploring. Some 70 miles of trails wind their way throughout Point Mugu State Park, and there are routes available to suit a wide variety of fitness levels. The Scenic and Overlook Trails Loop runs just under three miles and is a popular, easy route that's reasonably close to the Sycamore Canyon Campground. It offers some lovely ocean views that will have you stopping to snap plenty of photos. Mugu Peak Trail is a little over five miles and offers more of a physical challenge for hikers. Located in the southern section of the park, it's quite steep in a few places and offers impressive views of the surrounding mountains and coastline. Some trails also lead you into the Boney Mountains Wilderness Area, which is located in the eastern portion of the park. The views of Boney Mountain are particularly spectacular, and if you time your visit right during the spring, there's every chance you'll come across vibrant and colorful wildflowers while you're out exploring the trails.
